Chicago O’Hare Eyes New ‘Global Terminal’ in $8.5 Billion Expansion Plan

A massive expansion plan could turn one of the country’s busiest airports into one of the country’s best. Chicago could soon embark on an eight-year, $8.5 billion effort to rebuild much of O’Hare International and turn it into a global aviation hub on par with those in Dubai and Hong Kong. While the airport is one of the world’s busiest, with more than 78 million passengers in 2016, city officials including Mayor Rahm Emanuel say a major investment is needed to keep up with international competition. The hope is to add a brand-new terminal, more space, and more gates. The plan has yet to be officially announced, but a recent Chicago Tribune story tells us what to expect should it get the green light: “The 55-year-old Terminal 2 would be torn down to make way for a new ‘Global Terminal’ with wider concourses and gates to accommodate the larger aircraft that embark on international flights to places like Hong Kong and Dubai. Terminals 1, 3, and 5 would be renovated, while two new satellite concourses would be constructed to the west of the existing terminals and connected to the new Global Terminal by an underground pedestrian tunnel.” Those additions would nearly double the amount of space in the terminals, and the total number of gates at the airport would increase “from 185 today to roughly 220 upon the project’s completion in 2026,” the Tribune reports.
