Travelers from around the globe visit Puerto Vallarta for a wide range of reasons; from the charm of the cobblestone streets, to the action-packed land and sea adventures that can be experienced.  There are though, other hidden gems in this pacific city that lie in the tremendous opportunities Vallarta presents to absorb the culture of the region through discovering the ART.   Throughout the sunset town, galleries dot the downtown area and feature an impressive selection.

When you wander the friendly neighborhood’s, following the scents of fire grilled tacos and chilies, you can’t help but notice all the exhibitions, striking murals, parks decorated in glass tiles and storefronts that showcase Mexican artisans.  From original paintings to textiles and hand-made traditional items, there is an endless display of regional artistic expression.  Jalisco, the state in which Vallarta resides, is well known for Indigenous influences such as the Huichol Indians who create bold, colorful and unique works of art that weave the story of their ancestry.  The ultra-chic W Hotel in Punta de Mita, Nayarit, utilizes this imaginative art throughout the resort and is a must see.

One of the most recognized artists in Mexico is Sergio Bustamante.  He brought his immense talent to Jalisco and originally studied in the 60’s at the University of Guadalajara, the Capital city.  World-wide there are only a few of his galleries, one of which is located in the shopping district of Vallarta and exhibits Bustamante’s bronze sculptures, stunning jewelry and paintings. His extraordinary sculptures can also be found when strolling along the popular Malecon (Boardwalk), while enjoying the beautiful backdrop of the Bay of Banderas.  Many images of Vallarta feature the iconic “Boy on a Seahorse”, which is a memorable sculpture that also resides on the boardwalk, and was created by Rafael Zamarripa.

For visitors looking for an Art filled evening, Vallarta offers the fun and informative Art Walk throughout the peak travel season that takes you on a traditional journey, sampling styles and techniques from around the country.
